Oil on Canvas: 70 x 100cm
This impasto technique oil painting is of Trevi in Umbria between Foligno and Spoleto just off the SS3. One of its claims to fame (apart from having been painted by me) is that it has a lot of original Roman mosaic road paving. If you are a follower of my work you'll have noticed that I haven't painted landscapes in this classical sense. I have the opinion that it's very hard to capture the majesty of open country without creating a mythical looking painting. With this early sunset I wanted depth (hence the olive grove) but to make the hill top town of Trevi the centre piece. I also wanted the sky to be tall, hence painted the landscape in portrait. Of course I have a few characters resting under the olive trees, it's sunset and olive picking season so I'm sure they deserved it. I rather like it.
