Oil on Canvas: 100 x 80cmWaxy's Little Sister is a pub just off Leicester Square on the corner of Wardour Street and Lisle Street. Although it was daytime when I went there to prepare for this painting, I went for a night time representation as that is how I remember this area. As a student, friends and I would go for a Chinese meal in the early hours of Friday or Saturday nights mainly because they served us beer out of tea pots in the days when closing time was 11.20pm and the food was great. In fact I was standing by the door of the restaurant as I viewed this scene. The lady in charge was so friendly and motherly, I fear I was generally too drunk when I left at 4am to really convey how much she and her restaurant added to my enjoyment of London’s nightlife as a student. The pub opposite (which I think was called something else in those days) was generally shut when we arrived but between Leicester Square and Soho, this was the area of London that buzzed at night all year. This and the mini cab rank just further up the road will long be in my fondest memories.
